Tegenwoordig is het gebruikelijk dat een band zo ongeveer eens per twee jaar een album uitbrengt. Dat was in de jaren ’60 en het begin van de jaren ’70 wel anders, toen was norm minimaal één album per jaar. En dus bracht Pink Floyd, dat in 1967 debuteerde met The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, al in 1971 haar zesde album uit. Meddle werd in de eerste helft van 1971 opgenomen en in oktober van dat jaar uitgebracht. De opnames zouden oorspronkelijk plaatsvinden in de Abbey Road studio’s, maar de acht-sporen opnameapparatuur die daar beschikbaar was, voldeed niet aan de eisen van de band.
