Het startpunt van de nieuwe eeuw ligt voor velen niet op 1 januari 2000, maar juist als anderhalf jaar later de aanslagen van 11 september 2001 een zwarte episode van het geschiedenisboek inluiden. Het bruisende empathische inlevingsvermogen verstard en het egocentrische ingehouden tijdperk doet zijn intrede. De verdoofde samenleving wordt het hardste in het bloedende hart van New York getroffen, als de in basis verbonden verbindingslijnen deze zuurstofvoorzieningen zien afsterven. Aoife O'Donovan neemt noodgedwongen van haar speelse tienerjaren afstand om de opgedrongen volwassen vrouw positie te aanvaarden. Uit de asresten van het getroffen World Trade Center werkt men aan de wederopbouw om zich als een vurige moederlijk over haar nazaten...
