Het blijft een fijn gegeven dat pianist Brad Mehldau, die binnen de jazz al decennia één van de toonaangevende namen is, zich muzikaal steeds weer opnieuw wil uitvinden. Met Finding Gabriel, zijn nieuwe album, diept hij zijn muzikale paden weergaloos uit. Natuurlijk is de vrijheid van jazz de basis van alles wat hij naast zijn pure jazzalbums maakt. De jazz stroomt bij Mehldau door zijn aderen. Eerder liet hij in zijn samenwerkingen met pop-producer Jon Brion (Largo, 2002 en Highway Rider, 2010) al horen eigenzinnige popalbums in zijn hoofd te hebben.
