Om bij The Mountain Goats van een echte band te spreken is wel erg voorbarig. Het spil wordt gevormd door John Darnielle met als enige constante factor bassist Peter Hughes. Verder is het een komen en gaan van inwisselbare sterspelers, die allemaal hun aandeel drukken op de groepsalbums. Want we hebben het bij In League With Dragons ondertussen al over de zeventiende plaat van dit uit het Amerikaanse Claremont afkomstige gezelschap. Werd er bij voorganger Gothic nog geflirt in stijl en titels met de duistere postpunk en frisse new wave uit de jaren tachtig, nu is er weer sprake van een meer puur folk geluid.
