Half Japanese bestaat al sinds de jaren zeventig. Het is opvallend hoe productief de band rondom Jad Fair de laatste jaren weer is. Crazy Hearts is de vijfde plaat sinds 2016 en de opvolger van Invincible (2019). Nog steeds grossiert de band in songs over liefde en optimisme, afgewisseld met nummers over monsters en andere leukigheid. De muziek is ook nu weer rafelige indierock, die de ene keer wat meer naar poppy overhelt, de andere keer meer naar noise. Zo ‘anti-muzikaal’ als in de beginjaren wordt het niet meer en ook Fairs sympathieke (praat)zang zit frontaler in de mix; Half Japanese is tegenwoordig vrij toegankelijk. Al is dat relatief natuurlijk....
