"Everybody knows that tomatoes do not go in the refrigerator” ,  meldt de Amerikaanse noiserockband Deerhoof ons op albumopener Be Unbarred, O Ye Gates of Hell. Om de luisteraar bij opvolger Department of Corrections de luisteraar op te vrolijken met “miauw miauw” en robotachtig “beep beep” zanglijnen. De typerende Deerhoof-onzin is weer zo speels en bizar dat de verkapte maatschappijkritiek je in een oogwenk voorbij vliegt. Maatschappijkritiek over het milieu en voedselverspilling bijvoorbeeld. Maar soms zeggen songtitels meer dan de teksten zelf, zoals bij Our Philosphy is Fiction, stiekem over de inperking van creativiteit sinds covid? Of zoeken we er te veel achter?: een trieste ballad in toon, waarschijnlijk één...
