Met het in samenwerking met Kenny Greenberg en nieuwe geliefde Allison Moorer  tot stand gekomen What It Is kwam Hayes Carll in het vizier van een ruimer publiek van rootsliefhebbers. Carll bouwt zijn songwerk verder uit op country met bijhorende ritmiek  en rustiek snarenwerk dat hij samen met Greenberg aanlevert. Die sobere countryneske benadering klinkt nog sterker door als Fats Kaplan zijn fiddle bovenhaalt in de  en de alomtegenwoordige harmoniezang van onder meer Moorer draagt nog bij tot een warme sfeer. In de schrijfwerkerij is er bijstand van de The Brothers Osborne, terwijl Aaron Raitiere en Moorer meermaals als co-auteur vermeld worden, Different Boats kwam in samenwerking met Carlls wederhelft...
