Makaya McCraven is meer dan jazzdrummer en producer, vooral een ware kunstenaar met muziek. Zelf noemt hij zich het liefst ‘beatscientist’ maar die term is, ben ik bang, gewoonweg niet genoeg. Voor Deciphering The Message herinterpreteerde hij oude Blue Note tracks op een manier waarop ze volledig van deze tijd klinken maar toch die tijdloze sfeer van toen hebben. McCraven staat erom bekend om op zijn eigen albums, zoals In The Moment (2016) en Universal Beings (2018), al vaak spontane jamsessies achter de mengtafel tot ware tracks om te bouwen.
