In zijn relatief jonge leven legde Justin Townes Earle een grillig parcours af, evenals zijn beroemde, afwezige vader Steve Earle worstelt Justin tijdens zijn jeugdjaren met een hardnekkige verslavingen, op zijn eenentwintigste heeft hij een handvol overdosissen achter de rug. Het kost hem zijn vaste stek als muzikant bij The Dukes, vaders begeleidingsband. Uiteindelijk geraakt hij op het juiste spoor, en sinds 2007 vindt hij als singer-songwriter zijn weg met een persoonlijk repertoire. Het in Omaha , Nebraska opgenomen Kids In the Street haalt de ondertussen gehuwde muzikant even uit zijn comfortzone gehaald en dat resulteerde in zijn sterkste werk tot dusver.
