Bill Berry  stapte eind 1997 uit R.E.M. en trok zich terug in Athens, Georgia  waar hij in de jaren zeventig samen met bassist Mike Mills in de plaatselijke muziekscène verzeilde. Zo kwamen ze in contact met Michael Stipe en Peter Buck en dat resulteerde in de oprichting van R.E.M. Na zijn vertrek uit de legendarische formatie bleven de drumsticks zo goed als onaangeroerd. Het was Mike Mantione, een zanger gitarist die in de jaren negentig in Athens met Five Eight musiceerde, tijdens studiosessies dook bassist Dave Domizi op, later kwam gitarist Christian Lopez erbij.
