In 2004 komen Drive-By Truckers The Dirty South, na de drie jaar eerder uitgebrachte Southern Rock Opera die voortvloeide uit een discussie tussen frontman Patterson Hood (zoon van de legendarische bassist van de Muscle Shoals ritmesectie) en toenmalige bassist en producer Earl Hicks. Tijdens een rondreis ontspon zich een discussie over opgroeien in het Zuiden en de dramatische vliegtuigcrash in Mississippi die Lynyrd Skynyrd in de winter van 1977 zowat decimeerde. Traumatische ervaringen die resulteren in een semi-autobiografisch scenario, jaren later gevoed door Hood’s en Mike Cooley’s bijdragen en aanvullend songwerk van derde gitarist Rob Malone. Gebrek aan financiering bedreigen het project en de bijhorende tour, na een eerste editie...
