Dat bands als Bauhaus en Siouxsie and the Banshees aan de oorsprong van de duistere grijze gothic beweging staan zal niemand ontkennen. De tribal oorlogskleuren make-up van Siouxsie Sioux mixt het mystieke van de indianenvolkeren met het eigenzinnige van de punk. Al snel volgt een breed haarlak leger dat voorbeeld en zijn haar vrouwelijke tegenhangers in elke grote in verval rakende stad op straat of in de uitgeleefde kraakpanden terug te vinden.
