“Brighter days are up a head” stelt Dwight Yoakam in de titelsong van zijn nieuwe langspeler, de eerste met nieuw, door Yoakam, met enige hulp van co-writers aangeleverd, materiaal, bijna 10 jaar na Second Hand Heart. Tussendoor was er nog een met bluegrass interpretaties gevulde langspeler van ouder werk. De afgelopen jaren werd het angstvallig stil rond de zingende cowboy. Yoakam probeerde het aanvankelijk in Nashville maar in het in de jaren zeventig  door mainstream countrypop gedomineerde muziekmekka was geen plaats voor een jonge rebelse muzikant die honky tonk vermengde met rockende hillbilly en bluegrass elementen. In Los Angeles ontmoette hij gitarist Pete Anderson, een gedeelde fascinatie voor Merle Haggard...
