De kerstperiode en vooral dat dwingend gezellige sfeertje dat er rondhangt hoeft niet echt voor mij. Helemaal rampzalig zijn die niet zelden in smart en vals sentiment gedrenkte melige muzikale toestanden die daar onlosmakelijk mee verbonden zijn. Dat het ook anders kan illustreerden de rond kerst gebouwde langspelers Quality Street van Nick Lowe en bovenal JD McPherson’s Socks! Ben Folds probeert nu met een pianoplaat te ontsnappen aan de gebruikelijke middelmaat van die met de Kerstperiode verbonden muzikale projecten. Dat lukt wonderwel met prachtige pianonummers die de klasse van Folds etaleren. Van het instrumentale Little Drummer Bolero over het sfeervolle, met naast een zangkoortje aan Toots Thielemans herinnerende harmonicaspel. Die...
