De zangeres en violiste uit Illinois speelt nog voor haar tienerjaren al op fiddlecontesten en vindt op haar veertiende onderdak bij Rounder, even voordien figureert ze samen met haar broer Viktor, een getalenteerde bassist, op Jim Hoiles’ Different Strokes. Het zijn echter bovenal haar bijzonder fraaie heldere zangtimbre en de schijnbaar moeiteloze verbinding van bluegrass met country- en popelementen die naar de grote doorbraak leiden. De muziek van de oorspronkelijk in bluegrasskringen gekoesterde Alison Krauss ontdekte ik halverwege de jaren negentig op een verzamel-cd met een overzicht van haar werk op Rounder.
