Dave Stewart, de man achter The Eurythmics en talloze andere projecten, ontdekte destijds het talent van de nauwelijks zestienjarige blonde Britse snarensensatie die even in zijn begeleidingsband figureerde. Joanne Shaw Taylor aanschouwde ik voor het eerst op een podium tijdens een passage met Erja Lyytinen ter gelegenheid van een vroege editie van Ruf’s Blues Caravan in 2009, vier jaar later keerde ze terug met dat project van haar toenmalige platenfirma. Ondertussen is ze aan haar tiende studio-album toe. Black & Gold vond onderdak bij Journeman, de platen firma van Joe Bonamassa met wie Taylor al enige samenwerkt, voor de productie werd de eveneens vertrouwde Kevin Shirley aangetrokken.
