Zo’n drie decennia wisselen Joey Burns en John Convertino muzikale ideeën uit in een persoonlijke benadering waarbij invloeden uit de Amerikaanse rock en jazz naadloos versmelten met de Latin cultuur naadloos versmelten in een rijk geschakeerde, wat mysterieuze mix. De nabijheid van de grens met Mexico in Tucson, Arizona, de thuishaven van de spilfiguren van Calexico is daarbij niet onbelangrijk. Burns en Convertino werkten eerder samen met Howe Gelb bij Giant Sand, samen verkasten ze vanuit Californië naar woestijngebied in Arizona. Aanvankelijk engageerden ze zich als ritmesectie voor plaatselijke muzikale projecten. Met  Calexico, een collectief vinden ze aansluiting met Mexicaanse invloeden.
