Met Mood Valiant is het uit Melbourne afkomstige Hiatus Kaiyote terug na zes jaar van stilte na hun succesvolle tweede album Choose Your Weapon (2015) en de wereldwijde tour die daar op volgde . Eigenlijk was alleen het soloalbum Needle Paw van frontvrouw Nai Palm dat daar in 2017 nog tussendoor kwam. Maar de vertraging bij het uitbrengen van een nieuw album had een heftige reden. Reeds in het najaar van 2018 waren de basistracks voor het nieuwe album al klaar maar werd bij Palm borstkanker geconstateerd.
