Na de muzikale avonturen met Richmond Fontaine genieten we al een tijdje van Willy Vlautins verbond met zangeres Amy Boone en dat leverde vanaf eerste album Collfax sombere in jazzy countrysoul gedrenkte verhalen die The Imperial en The Sea Drift  vullen. Een nachtelijk gesprek na een concert in Dublin met zangeres Amy die naar zo’n echte love song hunkerde, zonder de gebruikelijke dramatische wendingen, vormt  voor Vlautin de aanleiding  om nog eens achter zijn schrijftafel te kruipen. Bij repetities met het vertrouwde, superieure muzikantenclubje en producer John Morgan Askew duikt Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom op, het verhaal over een oudere muzikant kleurde eerder al Vlautin’s recentste boekwerk The Horse....
